The man behind the mask, Joaquin Rosendo, used to play in the Latin Lics band, where he had his first approach to the ‘electroguapachosa’ fusion. However that first adventure didn’t last. Joaquin dedicated more than one year to create Vetiver Bong and a set of songs that he played in company of Bruno Ruiz (guitar and voice), in 2005. Three years later, Joaquin decided to come back to Vetiver Bong’s original idea: a masked character performing alone, where the man behind the mask and the masked character become one who deepens his ‘cumbia’ passion.
In Vetiver Bong’s Story, our electroguapachoso antihero is decided to share a ministory in nine chapters –an inspiring passage through his rebirth after being lost in the street thanks to a table dance… Or to be clear: realizing he still has a heart –a very big heart- thanks to an exotic dancer. Even though the joyful and loving heartbeats were short. One day at the beach she disappears and he brings himself to the vice and the night again.
Vetiver Bong get inspired by Mexico City to create this kind of soundtrack of his life. But his escapes to the beach during Eastern inspired them too, as well as any starred table dance establishments, and the night, the bars, its decadence and double senses. The streets, the country bars, ‘ficheras’ films, marketplaces, bongs, ‘Que transa con las bandas’ book, magazines, amongst many others inspire them too.
There’s an unofficial story that says Joaquin had to rob stone sacks to buy Vetiver Bong’s mask and his white shirts… but that will never be known for sure.
What we know for real is that cumbia, D&B, dub, rock, à gogo, ambient, funk, Piporro’s songs, Rigo Tovar, Rockdrigo Gonzalez, Jaime Lopez, El Haragan, Kraftwerk, The Cure, Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Nortec, salsa and merengue.
